Before moving to Beulah and New Life, my family lived in Ellendale, ND. It was in Ellendale that I connected with my nerd roots. It was there that I worked in the IT/AV (Information Technology/Audio Visual) office. One of the tasks we had in the office was to troubleshoot slow computers. Usually they were caused by software installed that bogged down the machine. Some software was good, some was bad. Many times we would have to “wipe” the machine, restore it to factory defaults. Good software could be put back, bad left off.
This is similar in many ways to parenting. When we’re raised we pick up good and bad tendencies through our parents and family. Just like software on the computer, we have to decide what’s good or bad and filter accordingly. The Bible should be the filter we use to make that decision. How I was raised, no matter how much I loved or hated it, will be the pattern I use unless I proactively change it.
1 Kings 1 tells the story of Adonijah, David’s son. He declares himself king without the approval or King David. Bathshebia and Nathan approach King David and remind him of his promise to appoint Solomon and what Adonijah has done. The Bible describes David as a man after God’s own heart, but in the area of his family it definitely put the fun in dysfunction (note Absalom in 2 Sam. 16). In all of David's pursuit for God, he missed the importance of passing along his passion to his family.
Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it.” I believe God’s vision for our families is create an atmosphere where the presence of God resides and our family and catch the importance of serving Jesus. This can be done by connecting with our family spiritually. Spiritual connection comes by talking, praying, and worshiping together. Leading by example and sharing the relationship with Jesus demonstrate the importance of following Him. Family is a priority in God’s vision for our lives. I encourage you to find ways to make it your priority as well.
